Types of Fishing

The Upper Nushagak offers diverse fishing opportunities throughout the season. Whether you’re chasing hard-fighting salmon or colorful Arctic species, each cast promises excitement.

• Silver Salmon (Coho) – August 10 through September 5. Known for their acrobatic fights and incredible strength, Silvers are a favorite among anglers. Late summer brings peak action, with fish filling the river in large numbers.
• Rainbow Trout - Trophy-sized rainbows thrive in the Nushagak system, feeding on salmon eggs and smolt. Their vivid colors and aggressive takes make them a highlight for any fly angler.
• Dolly Varden - These beautifully marked char are plentiful and provide consistent action. A great species for both fly and spin anglers.
• Northern Pike - Found in backwater sloughs and shallow bays, pike in this region grow big and mean. Perfect for those seeking explosive topwater strikes.
• Arctic Grayling - With their sail-like dorsal fins and delicate rise to dry flies, grayling are a quintessential Alaskan species — elegant and plentiful in clear streams.
